Grown-Up Swimming Debuts on the Space Coast

Space Coast, FL – Remember those sun-soaked summers spent on the pool deck, your friends psyching you up for the 25-yard breaststroke, your parents cheering you on from the sidelines, and your team proudly sporting matching caps and vibrant suits? For many adults, those memories feel like a distant past. Today, parents often watch with a mix of envy and nostalgia as their kids suit up for recreational swim teams, longing for the good old days.

But what if you could relive the excitement of a recreational swim meet—this time with your adult friends? Whether you're a seasoned swimmer who knows the order of the 100 IM, or someone just dipping their toes into aquatic fitness, there’s a new opportunity for you.

On Saturday, August 17th, the inaugural Grown-Up Swimming (GUS) Space Coast meet took place, bringing together 93 adults across 7 teams to participate in relays and individual events. To keep the whole family engaged, the meet kicked off with an Multigenerational Relay, allowing teams to mix youth and adult swimmers—giving kids a chance to cheer on their parents from poolside.

The meet on the 17th was the first of four for the 2024 season.
"The meet brought back those familiar, healthy jitters from my high school days," said Kevin Compayre, a member of Team Basket Cases. "Just because we're aging gracefully doesn’t mean we’re getting old."

Event coordinator BJ Graham of Swim Melbourne Masters, who launched the Space Coast league earlier this year, expressed excitement about the program’s growth in Brevard County and beyond.

“The ages and abilities of our swimmers have no boundaries,” said Graham. “We had men and women who swam competitively when younger, as well as those who just started swimming this year! The league is open to adults over 18, and the oldest swimmer is 73. It’s all about creating a fun atmosphere for adult swimming—so many cheers, smiles, and a sense of accomplishment.”

The Grown-Up Swimming League first debuted in Atlanta in 2020, and the concept has quickly spread across the country. The Space Coast and Jacksonville leagues are currently the only programs in Florida. Adults interested in participating don’t need to be affiliated with a Masters swim program, but they do need to join a GUS team, register for the league, and sign up for the meets they wish to participate in. All teams are welcoming new members, or you can even start your own team!

"I absolutely loved swimming in my very first meet! It was so much fun, even though I was initially scared to death," exclaimed Karen Monahan, a swimmer on Team Guppies. "I highly recommend this program—everyone is incredibly supportive and so much fun to be around."
